terms & condtions of entry

1) ‘Take a view’ is an annual photographic competition open to everyone except those involved in its organisation. The organisers of the competition are Lightworx Ltd t/a Take a view.

2) Entries must have been taken in the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

3) Entries must have been taken within the five years immediately prior to the closing date. Images that have won an award in a nationally promoted competition (including Take a view 2007), or that have been entered in such a competition where the results are still pending, are not eligible for entry.

4) All entries must be submitted digitally (scans from film are acceptable) and must be uploaded via www.take-a-view.co.uk No entries will be accepted by mail. No digital files will be returned, but all low-resolution images, apart from those short-listed, will be destroyed after the close of the competition.

5) The closing date is the 12th July 2008 (at midnight between the 12th & 13th).

6) There are 4 adult categories:

Classic view
Living the view
Your view
Phone view

For further information on which category you should choose, please see the ‘How to enter’ section.

A maximum total of 15 images per entrant may be submitted across these categories. For example, you may enter 3 in Classic view, 3 in Living the view, 5 in Your view and 4 in Phone view or you may enter 15 in Classic view. Entrants may submit the same image into more than one category, but each category entry counts as a separate image upload. (For example, if you pay for 5 entries and upload the same image into Classic view and Your view, then 2 of your 5 entry spaces have been used).

The entry fees are as follows:

Up to 1 image:           £7.00
Up to 5 images:        £15.00
Up to 10 images:      £20.00
Up to 15 images:      £25.00

If you pay for and submit five images but then decide to submit a further five images as a new transaction at a later date, you will have to pay the full ‘five image’ fee for this second transaction, rather than paying the difference between the ‘five image’ and ‘ten image’ fees. ie. You will pay £15 + £15, rather than the ‘ten image’ discounted fee of £20.

The overall winner, the Landscape Photographer of the Year 2008, will be the person whose image is selected as the best by the judging panel from these four categories.

7) There are four categories for those aged 16 and under on 12th July 2008:

Classic view
Living the view
Your view
Phone view

For further information on which category you should choose, please see the ‘How to enter’ section.

A maximum total of 15 images per entrant may be submitted across these categories. For example, you may enter 3 in Classic view, 3 in Living the view, 5 in Your view and 4 in Phone view or you may enter 15 in Classic view.

The entry fees are as follows:

Up to 15 images:      £2.00

The overall winner, the Young Landscape Photographer of the Year 2008, will be the person whose image is selected as the best by the judging panel from these four categories. Entry fees for those under 16 will be paid online, by credit or debit card, by the entrant’s parent or guardian. Paying for the entry will be seen as granting permission for the entry to be made.

8) Initial entry.

Image files should be uploaded to the site as jpegs with 800 pixels along the longest length. You must ensure that you upload your images the right way round. No responsibility can be taken by the organisers for images that are submitted backwards or incorrectly orientated. Black & white images are eligible for all categories, as are images of panoramic format.

9) File naming protocol.

Please name your digital files with your surname, initial & image number. For example, if your name is Joe Bloggs and you are submitting 10 images, your numbers would run from bloggsj01.jpg to bloggsj10.jpg. Please do not include capital letters, spaces or any other characters in your file names. All images will be cross-referenced, by the organisers, with a unique identifying number, so that the judging is completely anonymous and based on the image alone. When you upload your images, you will be asked for caption information. This will not be used for judging purposes.

10) File sizes.
a) Images from digital cameras can be submitted to Classic view, Living the view and/or Your view and must have been taken using a camera with a sufficiently high resolution to allow the image to be reproduced at A4 size or above (at 300 ppi). We recommend that you use a camera of 4 mega pixels or more.

NB Please ensure that your camera is on its highest-quality setting.

b) Images that have been scanned from transparencies or negatives are eligible for Classic view, Living the view and Your view. The high-resolution scan that will be required for short-listed images should be a minimum of 30mb as an uncompressed tiff file, although a high-quality jpeg is acceptable. (8 bit, Adobe RGB 1998 colour space).

c) Images submitted for entry in Phone view must have been taken with a camera phone of 1 mega pixel or more.

11) Digital adjustments.

Digital adjustments, including High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging techniques, are allowed. The integrity of the image must be maintained and the making of physical changes to the landscape is not permitted (removing fences, moving trees, stripping in sky from another image etc). The organisers reserve the right to disqualify any image that they feel lacks authenticity due to over-manipulation.

12) Copies.

Please ensure that you keep copies of submitted images. The organisers will take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe storage and back-up of entries, but cannot be held responsible for exceptional circumstances including Acts of God.

13) Judging.

All images will be assessed by a panel of judges, including top landscape photographer, Charlie Waite and a shortlist will be announced following the closing date of 12/07/08. All those on the shortlist will be contacted by email and will then have 10 days to supply a high-resolution file. Failure to produce a high resolution file of the correct size (see # 10) within the designated time period will eliminate an entrant from the shortlist. The organisers cannot be held responsible for emails that do not arrive due to the entrant’s email security settings or restrictions placed by their Internet service provider. Entrants, whose images are shortlisted, will be asked to supply an extended caption that will be subject to the terms # 15a and #16. All winners will be notified by email and the prize presentation ceremony will be held at the National Theatre, London in November 2008. A list of the winners will be published on the Take a view website from November 2008.

14) Prizes.

15) Copyright and permissions.

By submitting images to Take a view, each entrant confirms and warrants that:

a) they are the sole author of each entry and that it is their original work;

f) on any merchandise commissioned by the organisers.

Entrants also agree that the organisers can sub-license images to the media for reproduction in connection with the competition.

In addition, the UK’s national and regional tourist organisations (including, but not limited to: Enjoy England, Visit Wales, VisitScotland, VisitBritain, Britain on view, Jersey Tourism, VisitGuernsey, Northern Ireland Tourist Board) may also reproduce, enlarge, publish or exhibit, on any media, the images for promotional purposes, with sufficient accreditation, from the date of 2008 results notice until 31st December 2009. All photography to be credited ‘Take a view/Photographer name’.

For any use that falls outside this remit, royalties will be discussed & negotiated with the photographer concerned.

Copyright of each image is retained by its respective photographer.

Finalists agree to take part in post-competition publicity.

17) Take a view reserves the right to remove any entries from the competition that it feels may breach or contravene laws of public decency or may bring the photographer into disrepute. Such entries will be deemed as void and any fees paid will not be refunded.

18) The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Should the entries in any category fall below the standard required by the competition organisers and the judges, then the organisers reserve the right not to award prizes.

19) All images must be uploaded, via the Take a view website, following the on-screen instructions. Any queries should be directed to info@take-a-view.co.uk

20) Take a view's web Privacy Policy and web site terms and conditions apply.

21) Refund policy.

By accepting the terms and conditions of the competition and subsequently submitting your images, you have entered into an agreement with Take a view. Once entered, images cannot be withdrawn unless the organisers are notified of a permissions problem, in which case the images will be withdrawn on request of the copyright holder (entrant) but no refund will be payable.

If you intend to submit ten images and pay the fee for this, but then only submit/upload a smaller number (for example, five) then you will not be entitled to a refund.

If you feel you are entitled to a refund, you may request this by contacting us. We review all refund requests on a case-by-case basis and reserve the right to decline any refund for any reason.

If a refund is approved, it will be actioned through the payment gateway you paid through. Your refund will be credited to the card you made payment with. You will receive a full refund minus the gateway processing costs.

22) The information given in these Terms and Conditions is correct, but Take a view reserve the right to change any of the above without prior notice. By entering the competition, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these Terms and Conditions.  Any breach of these Terms by an entrant will void their entry. If a breach has occurred, but is discovered after the award of a prize, then the organisers may request the return of that prize.
