Selecting your images Choosing a category Resizing your images Enter and upload

Your next decision is to choose a category for each image you wish to enter. There are four categories, as described below. If you are not sure which to choose, you can select a slide show to see a few examples. (These examples are to help with subject choice only and may not have been taken on an appropriate camera). You can enter the same image in more than one category.
Classic view

classic view

We are looking for an image that captures the beauty and variety of the UK landscape. An iconic view; a view along a cliff-side path or of a historic village; a view down a valley; an urban skyline or snow-capped peaks; maybe showing the drama of our seasons. Recognisable and memorable; a true classic. All entries must have been taken using a camera with a sufficiently high resolution to allow the image to be reproduced at A4 size or above (at 300 ppi) or scanned from film. We recommend that you use a camera of 4 mega pixels or more.

Living the view

living the view

This is a category for images of people interacting with the outdoors – working or playing in the UK landscape. Possible subjects include mountain bikers, kite boarders, walkers, shepherds or even your best friend biting into a sandwich - as long as your picture shows people within their outdoor environment. No close-up portraits please. If you have a picture of animals – eg. one that just shows your dog or sheep in the landscape, it should not be entered in this category. All entries must have been taken using a camera with a sufficiently high resolution to allow the image to be reproduced at A4 size or above (at 300 ppi) or scanned from film. We recommend that you use a camera of 4 mega pixels or more.

Living the View

Your view

your view

What does the UK landscape mean to you? A stream rushing over pebbles, a foggy day in the Peak District, fish & chips on a deserted beach, you and your friends on your first big summit. Pretty much anything goes, as long as it is in the UK and in the outdoors. Use your imagination, as you have the scope for a very conceptual and personal approach. All entries must have been taken using a camera with a sufficiently high resolution to allow the image to be reproduced at A4 size or above (at 300 ppi) or scanned from film. We recommend that you use a camera of 4 mega pixels or more.

Your View

Urban view

urban view

It’s hard to pin down an exact figure, but statistics suggest that up to 80% of the UK population lives in towns or cities. That’s a huge number, so we wanted a category that highlights the surroundings that many of us live in every day. It has always been possible to enter city skylines in Classic view and concepts in Your view (and you still can), but this category really focuses on the subject - from historic to modern - but no underground car parks, tube stations etc please – anything urban and outside is eligible. We will be taking a broad approach subject-wise – the word ‘urban’ is used as a general theme, so ‘suburban’ areas or country towns are fine. You may decide to go on a city break to get inspiration or you may take your camera on your daily commute to work. All entries must have been taken using a camera with a sufficiently high resolution to allow the image to be reproduced at A4 size or above (at 300 ppi) or scanned from film. We recommend that you use a camera of 4 mega pixels or more.

Urban View

If you have entered Take a view before, you may notice that the Phone view category has disappeared. Phone cameras have been improving in quality all the time and so the gap has closed between them and many compact cameras, so we have decided to change things round a bit and introduce the new ‘Urban view’ category as an alternative for 2010. Images from mobile phones are eligible for all the main categories – although we recommend that your phone has a camera of 4MP or higher.

SPECIAL AWARDS

The Network Rail ‘Lines in the Landscape’ AwardNetwork Rail

With 20,000 miles of track, the rail network courses through the country. With its iconic Victorian bridges and viaducts and modern engineering architecture, it helps to shape the visual history of Britain. We’re not looking for details of trains or stations, but images that show the many ways in which the railway forms some of the most impressive views of the British landscape.

Images may be submitted for this Award of the operational national rail network anywhere in Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland). Please enter your image into its appropriate main Award category and then additionally select the ‘Network Rail Award’ option on the entry form.

Please note that images of any underground railway systems, light rail systems, heritage railways, disused infrastructure, pier railways or model railways are not eligible for this award.

NB: Trespassing on the railways is not only dangerous but is a criminal offence which may lead to prosecution. All images must have been taken from public access land or rights of way.

This is an extra prize and does not affect your main entry.

The Natural England ‘Landscape on your Doorstep’ AwardNatural England

Natural England is offering a Special Award for the photograph that best demonstrates how everyday landscapes matter.

The Award is open to all age groups and is for images capturing an English landscape in close proximity to your home; ‘low carbon’ photography that best shows, in the judge’s opinion, the accessibility of natural beauty.

To be eligible for this award, images must be of England and must have been taken within a ten-mile radius of your permanent address.

This is an extra prize and does not affect your main entry. If your image is eligible, you will have a chance to select this as an additional option when uploading your entry.
